Ethiopians consider themselves to be deeply religious. I can’t fully characterise this but here is my experience from this morning.
Women draped in white shawls were walking towards the church from all streets in the neighbourhood. They would first stop at the gate, pray there sitting or holding the grill. I saw one performing a sajda as well. They would then enter the gate and sit in the garden, under one tree or the other, some together, some by themselves. There finally was a small gathering in the church veranda. Maybe it was full inside as well. You could hear a service going on.
With eyes and years towards the church, sitting in reverence, they had it surrounded like birds in a congregation.
